Caring for Polyurethane Finished Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors with a polyurethane finish add warmth and durability to your home. With a bit of regular care, you can keep them looking great for years. Here’s a simple maintenance guide.

Daily and Weekly Maintenance

Dusting and Sweeping:

Dust and grit can scratch your floors over time. Use a microfiber dust mop or a soft-bristled broom daily to remove debris. If you prefer vacuuming, ensure you use a hardwood floor attachment to protect the finish.

Spot Cleaning:

Quickly address spills and smudges. Blot up spills immediately with a soft, absorbent cloth. For minor marks, lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. We also recommend Bona hardwood floor cleaner and Basic Squeaky. Gently wipe the area without saturating the floor.

Monthly Cleaning

Damp Mopping:

Once a month, damp mop your floors using warm water mixed with a pH-neutral hardwood cleaner. The mop should be damp, not wet, to avoid water damage. Mop in the direction of the wood grain, then immediately dry the floor with a clean cloth.

Preventative Measures

Protective Accessories:

Place felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches, and use area rugs in high-traffic areas. Consider a no-shoes policy indoors to reduce tracked-in dirt, and make sure pet nails are regularly trimmed.

Environmental Control:

Maintain indoor humidity between 30% and 50% with a humidifier in winter or a dehumidifier in summer. Stable humidity helps prevent the wood from expanding or contracting excessively, reducing the risk of warping or gaps.

Long-Term Care

Avoid Harsh Cleaners:

Use only cleaners and tools designed for hardwood floors. Avoid abrasive chemicals, waxes, polishes, or oil soaps that can damage the polyurethane finish.

By following these simple steps, you’ll keep your polyurethane finished hardwood floors looking beautiful and lasting longer.
